What is a sales funnel and how do you build one for your business?

Short answer: a sales funnel is the path someone travels from the moment they discover you until they buy from you — and what most businesses in Colombia have broken isn’t their marketing, it’s the connection between the stages: they get people interested and lose them because nobody replies in time or there’s no clear step toward the purchase. A well-built funnel isn’t a marketing theory, it’s a system with concrete pieces: content that attracts, a page that converts, and someone (or something) that closes.

The 4 stages, without jargon

Forget the complicated diagrams. In practice, a funnel has 4 moments:

  1. Attraction. People discover you — through social media, Google, ads, word of mouth. The goal here is just one: that they know you exist.
  2. Conversion. Someone interested leaves a detail (name, WhatsApp, email) in exchange for something — an answer, a download, a quote. This is where a curious visitor becomes a real contact.
  3. Closing. The contact becomes a customer. This is where most businesses lose money: the prospect writes and nobody replies in time, or the reply comes late and they’ve already bought from the competition.
  4. Loyalty. The customer comes back, or recommends you. The stage almost nobody works on, and the cheapest of all — selling to someone who already trusts you costs a fraction of winning a new customer.

Why most funnels in Colombia are broken

It isn’t a lack of strategy — it’s that each stage is handled by a different piece, with no connection:

  • The ads are run by an agency (or by the owner, in a rush).
  • The landing page was made by someone two years ago and nobody has touched it since.
  • WhatsApp messages get answered “when there’s time”.
  • Following up with whoever asked and didn’t buy… doesn’t exist.

The result: you invest in attracting people, and it all leaks out between conversion and closing. It’s like filling a bucket with a hole in the bottom — the more water you pour in, the faster it empties if you don’t plug the hole first.

A concrete example

Imagine you run a beauty clinic. You post a Reel that 500 people like (attraction). 20 write asking about prices (conversion). Of those 20, only 3 get a reply the same day — the other 17 have already chosen another clinic that answered quickly (broken closing). Of the 3 who did talk to you, 1 books (closing). That person never hears from you again after the appointment, even though they left happy (loyalty lost).

The problem wasn’t the content — it was everything that happened (or didn’t) afterward.

What a funnel that actually works looks like

  • Attraction: content and ads aimed at whoever would actually buy, not “everyone”.
  • Conversion: a simple landing page or form, without unnecessary friction, that captures the right details.
  • Closing: an immediate reply — with an AI WhatsApp assistant, it doesn’t depend on someone on the team being free at that moment. It answers, books or quotes instantly, and lets you know when a human is needed.
  • Loyalty: automatic follow-up — reminders, promotions for people who already bought, re-engaging whoever was still thinking it over.

The 4 stages connected, not 4 loose pieces someone puts together when they remember.

Common mistakes when building one

  1. Investing in ads without fixing closing first. It’s throwing money away: you get more people into the same leaky funnel.
  2. A form that asks for too much. Every extra field is people who drop off before becoming a contact.
  3. Zero follow-up with those who didn’t buy right away. Most sales don’t close on the first contact — without follow-up, that prospect is lost forever.
  4. Nobody measures where people drop off. If you don’t know whether the problem is attraction, conversion or closing, you’re guessing what to fix.
