# PWA or native app? Which one is right for your business (an honest comparison)

*Published: 2026-07-02 · Galactic AIMA team*

**Short answer:** for most businesses (restaurants, shops, clinics, services), a **PWA** — progressive web app — is the smart choice: it installs on the phone like any app, costs a fraction of a native app and pays no app store fees. A **native app** is worth it when you need advanced phone hardware or your strategy depends on showing up in Google Play and the App Store.

Let me explain the difference the way I’d explain it to a friend.

## What each one is (in plain English)

- **Native app:** downloaded from Google Play or the App Store. It’s built specifically for Android and for iPhone — often as two separate developments.
- **PWA (progressive web app):** modern technology that makes a web application behave like an app: it installs on the home screen (Android and iPhone), opens full screen, loads instantly and can work offline. Your customers install it **straight from your website**, without going through app stores.

Giants like Starbucks, Uber and Spotify use it for their web versions. It isn’t a cheap shortcut: it’s first-class technology.

## The comparison that matters

| Criterion | PWA | Native app |
|---|---|---|
| Development cost | $ (a single build) | $$$ (often two: Android + iOS) |
| Installation | Straight from your website, one tap | Download from the stores |
| App store fees | None | Google USD 25 (once) + Apple USD 99/year |
| Updates | Instant for everyone | Store review on every change |
| Works on Android and iPhone | Yes | Yes (if you pay for both builds) |
| Push notifications | Yes (Android and modern iPhone) | Yes |
| Advanced hardware (sensors, Bluetooth) | Limited | Full |
| Presence in the stores | Optional (there are ways) | Yes |

## When to choose a PWA

- Your app is for **selling, booking, ordering, checking information or building loyalty** — 90% of business cases.
- You want to launch **fast** and on a small-business budget.
- You’d rather customers install the app **from your website or a QR code in your store**, without app store friction.
- You want **a single app** that works the same on Android and iPhone.

## When to choose a native app

- You need **deep hardware access**: specialized Bluetooth, sensors, augmented reality, heavy offline processing.
- Your customer acquisition strategy depends on **being discovered by searching the stores**.
- You compete in a category where the experience standard is native (games, high-volume fintech).

Torn between the two? Start with a PWA. If the business takes off and the needs grow, the path to native is always there — and by then the app will have paid for itself. The reverse path (paying for native only to find out you didn’t need it) hurts a lot more.

## The detail almost nobody tells you: ownership

Whether it’s a PWA or native, there’s a question more important than the technology: **will the app be yours?**

The market is full of rental models: you pay a monthly fee forever and, if you stop paying, your app disappears with your data inside it. Our position at [Galactic AIMA](https://www.galacticaima.com/en/solutions/custom-apps) is the opposite — every app is delivered with **code, data and access in the client’s name**. We call it digital sovereignty, and it’s the difference between owning an app and renting one.

We have [PWAs in production](https://www.galacticaima.com/en/solutions/custom-apps) running every day — menus and ordering, admin panels, management systems — all delivered with the client’s full ownership.

## In short

- **PWA:** the smart choice for the vast majority of businesses. Faster to launch, much more affordable, no app store fees.
- **Native:** for advanced technical needs or an app store strategy.
- **Either way:** demand ownership of your app.
